The presence of an over-arching plot line also does the show no harm whatsoever. The main difference between this show and Herc (and the reason why I never really got into Hercules as a series) is that Legend takes the time to develop its characters. Indeed, that was what it seemed to be, but I stuck with it through episode after episode and you know what? I actually like it! The feared Hercules cloning extends only to props and sets. I sat back and watched that pilot episode and the greatest fear I had was that I'd be watching Hercules or Xena with a more fantasy bent. It seems to me that 90% of the negative comments about this show can be summed up in the sentence "It's not like the books!" As someone who managed to lend half an ear once to an audio disc version of Wizard's First Rule whilst working nights some years ago, even I spotted that the show's opening episode was different from what I recalled.
